Mehndi Artist

Bombay Photography enjoys working with local and talented artists.  We recently had the pleasure of meeting gifted Mehndi Designer, Sheetal Behra.  Sheetal has been employing the art of Mehndi since her childhood in India.  For the last year, Sheetal has been using her art to bring the Mehndi custom to weddings, bridal showers, baby showers and other special events in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.   She specializes in Indian and Arabic styles but also can incorporate modern tattoo designs into her art.   Sheetal uses her own henna paste made up of henna powder, essential oils, lemon and sugar so it is completely safe.
Mehndi is an ancient art used for centuries in Indian weddings and other events.  Mehndi designers, such as Sheetal, uses rich hues from henna plants to do intricate designs on the hands and feet of men and women.  There is a lot of symbolism associated with Mehndi and an Indian wedding.  For example, a dark design is a sign of good luck for the couple.  Another, tradition is hiding the names of the bride and groom in the Mehndi design and the wedding night cannot commence until the groom has found the names.  Other popular images include the peacock, the lotus flower and an elephant with a raised trunk, another symbol of good luck.
There are four traditional Mehndi styles often seen in Indian celebrations.  The Middle Eastern style uses mostly floral patterns and is free flowing.  The North African style follows the shape of the hands and the feet and uses more geometrical floral patterns.  The Pakistani and Indian designs tend to extend up the arms and legs giving the illusion of gloves or stockings.  The designs use more lines, teardrops and paisley patterns.  And lastly, the South Asia and Indonesian styles use a mix of designs and incorporate blocks of colors on the tips of the fingers.   Today, designs can be any of the above or a mix of them.  More modern designs may also use Celtic or Chinese symbols popular in modern tattooing.
