Wedding Traditions: Car Decorations

Weddings are filled with tradition and it's the special details and cultural elements that truly make it special.  We love the tradition of decorating wedding cars. Wedding cars can be decorated in a variety of themes, make a great photo and can be an integral part of the wedding!
Like many traditions, the how and why of decorating a wedding car is varied from culture to culture.  American wedding tradition has a more whimsical or playful approach and is often done by the wedding party as a way of sending off the bride and groom.  Decorations usually consist of a sign or window painting proclaiming the message “Just Married” and cans and streamers trail from the bumper.  The jangling of the cans is an old superstition that is said to ward off evil spirits.  There are many variations of how this basic car decoration and some couples choose to forgo it altogether.
Indian tradition, however, uses the car as a more deliberate and important part of the wedding decorations.  It also tends to be more sophisticated and regal and may include more than one vehicle.  The car the groom arrives in is decorated and held in high esteem for it is also the vehicle he will take his bride home in.  As such, the groom’s car is decorated in gorgeous fresh flowers reminiscent of the ancient ‘Doli’.

For an even more traditional Indian look, maroon and yellow flowers are used to decorate the car.  However, for a modern look, brides choose flowers which coordinate with their wedding theme. Netted draping, satin, organza, bows, zari doris, mirror artifacts, hangings and other accessories can also be used for a dramatic effect.  The Indian Wedding Car becomes a work of art and has the appearance of royalty.  And what bride doesn’t want to feel like a princess on her wedding day?!
